May 2026 Newsletter

It’s been a great year of Scouting for Pack 729, and we’re ending the school year strong with plenty of activity. And even though crossover is this month, there is plenty more to come.

April Roundup

Somehow, someway, the Easter Bunny ended up at our April Pack Meeting! Our Scouts did a great job finding all the eggs he hid, especially the gold ones.

It was great to see so many Scouts out in their uniform at the Hayes Earth Day Celebration, and as some of you may have noticed, due to Ms. Lakatos’s efforts along with those of her Green Team and our Scouts’ work in building the Bee Kind Pollinator Garden, the Hayes Earth Day celebration has been made the official Earth Day celebration of the City of Westland, so expect us to keep having our Scouts wear their uniform on that day and we’ll keep working on ways to be more involved in serving our community and our planet.

A student film about the environmental efforts at Hayes, called The Hayes Way was mentioned at the Hayes Earth Day celebration. It talks about the Green Team and our Pollinator Garden, and has received numerous awards. You can watch it below:

Crossover Cookout

The Crossover Cookout is our final Pack Meeting of the school year and is when all scouts cross over to their next den.

Your scout will need the neckerchief and slide for their next rank. You can find what their next rank is and where to get neckerchiefs at in our Uniform Guide.

Please note: our Uniform Guide has been updated for the upcoming year.

We’re supplying the Hot Dogs and toppings, please sign up to bring a side / dessert / dish to pass here. And please bring your own drinks.

Visiting the Knights of Detroit Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar

On May 4, at 6:30pm Pack 729 is going to be visiting the Knights of Detroit Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar at the historic Detroit Masonic Temple. There we will get to see them perform sword drills and get a tour of their asylum. We will also talk about the connection between Knighthood and the Scouts.

The Detroit Masonic Temple is located at 500 Temple St. Detroit, MI 48201. The nearby image is a map for where to enter the parking lot, but essentially it's just behind the building off 2nd. Just let them know you're there to visit "Detroit Commandery" and they will let you in. If that lot ends up filling up there are several lots marked around it.

Please be prompt, they expect to start at 6:30, and come in full uniform. We will be meeting on the 3rd floor. Please call if you have any questions.

A few of us will be eating dinner at American Coney Island, located at 114 W Lafayette Blvd, Detroit, MI 48226, which is about a 5 minute drive away if you would like to join us.

Den Meeting - Can & Bottle Drive Flyer Pass Out
May 5 | 6:30pm

This Meeting will be at Corrado Park where we will receive instructions and flyers to flyer the neighborhood, promoting our Can & Bottle drive. Be sure to come in uniform and dress for the weather.

This is treated like any other kind of outdoor event so we’re going to have buddies, and be sure to bring the Cub Scout Six Essentials. Also, Cub Scouts are to bring no personal modes of transportation to this event, so no skateboards, roller skates, bikes, et cetera. They will be going door to door, so those won’t do them any good anyways.

Can & Bottle Drive
May 9 | 10am

Our Can & Bottle Drive is on Saturday May 9th from 10am-3pm. You can find the flyer for our Can & Bottle Drive here. We will be picking up cans from neighborhood homes, accepting can donations at the bus loop and sorting cans by type, making turning them in easier. As cans get sorted, we will also send teams to begin returning cans. Please wear Class B uniform to this event, and be sure to bring a drink and snack.

We expect 100% participation at this event as it is our biggest fundraiser of the year.

The Crossover Cookout is our final Pack Meeting of the school year and is when all scouts cross over to their next den.

Summer Activities

The fun doesn’t stop when the Scout year ends. We have a variety of Summertime activities planned. And your scout can get a special belt loop or pin for their rank if they participate in a total of three of these Summertime activities.

Wayne-Westland Veterans Memorial Day Parade
May 24 | 12:15pm

For our first summer event, on May 24th will meet at 12:15pm at John Glenn High School to march in the Wayne-Westland Veterans Memorial Day Parade. Please be sure to dress in full uniform, and bring water, and sunscreen. We will also be handling the flag ceremony at the end of the parade. So be sure to stick around.

Archery at Detroit Archers
June 27 | 9:30am

We will be meeting at the Detroit Archers Club in West Bloomfield to have lunch (please bring your own drink for the day, the Pack will provide the food), hike the trails on the property (hopefully see some wildlife!), and of course the scouts favorite, have some fun shooting with bows and arrows!

Detroit Tigers Scout Day

All Scouts and Unit Leaders will also get to participate in a pre-game parade on the field (weather pending).

Ticket info coming soon.

Water Park Trip & BBQ
August 15 | 11am

For our Annual Water Park Trip & BBQ, this year we're heading back to Turtle Cove in Belleville. This is a great opportunity to complete special water adventures we don’t usually get to complete during the normal Scout year. You can find the adventures here:

Tigers: Tigers in the Water
Wolves: Paws for Water
Bears: Salmon Run
Webelos: Aquanaut
Arrow of Light: Swimming

Ability to complete adventures will depend on your Den Leader, crowding at the water park, and the availability of facilities.

Ticket Prices: https://www.metroparks.com/lower-huron-metropark/#turtle_cove_family_aquatic_center

It’s been a great year, we’re set for an exciting month and we have a fun summer full of activity ahead of us.
